3D Form Making (DES2008)

Class Objectives
  • Expand spatial reasoning and 3D design sensibilities by breaking away from flat, 2D-oriented thinking
  • Develop hands-on fluency with diverse material properties through linear, planar, and volumetric media
  • Strengthen visual communication skills through structured presentation and critique sessions for every project
  • Build foundational AI literacy by exploring generative video tools and critically understanding their creative potential and limitations
What You Will Learn
  • How to interpret and translate a single adjective into an abstract three-dimensional form using a structured workflow of sketching, prototyping, and final fabrication
  • How to work with and respond to the physical properties of wire, paper, and clay as distinct expressive languages
  • How to articulate and defend design decisions verbally through mandatory feedback sessions
  • How to engage with fundamental design languages including form, structure, mass, proportion, tension, and light and shadow through direct material experience
  • How to use AI video generation tools to extend a physical sculpture into a moving image, and how to critically evaluate what AI can and cannot express
Hand Making Exemplars

Selected student works from sketch to final fabrication, interpreting adjectives as three-dimensional form.

AI Extension Exemplars

Selected student works extending physical sculptures into moving images through AI video generation. (Click on each work to preview the video.)
