Abstract

As ubiquitous computing technology has been developed, users are increasingly assimilating the ubicomp products into their daily life. It becomes much important to these products in providing rich emotional experiences. To explore these emotional interaction possibilities of an ubicomp product, we choose a desk lamp as a case and developed LAMPY, an assistive pet-like actuated lamp. LAMPY uses actuated arm structure with a color adjustable LEDs on its head part. With leap motion based gesture controlled lamp user can easily design and test features in mind. We introduce hardware and software configurations. We report on user needs and specific applications explored from the generative workshop along with the perceived emotional experiences. Based on our design experience and evaluations from the workshop, we discuss implications for effective emotional interactions, strategies on developing a pet-like products and further issues for improvement.
